The implementation of EU broiler welfare rules

EU broiler welfare rules (COUNCIL DIRECTIVE 2007/43/EC) has been implemented since 1 July 2010, after coming into force in 2007.

The directive covers minimum rules for the protection of chickens kept for meat production. 
Its scope applies to broilers but exclude farms with fewer than 500 chickens, breeders, hatcheries and extensive indoor or free-range chickens.  This regulation requires farms to apply drinkers, litter, ventilation and heating, noise emissions, air quality and hygiene.  Furthermore, inspection, monitoring and follow-up are also included in the obligation.

Maximum stoking density of broilers is identified at not more than 33 kg/m².  However, higher levels may be allowed to not exceed 39 kg/m², if the additional measures in an Annex are conducted.  
In addition, the maximum level may be increased to 42 kg/m², when farms are in compliance with the specific criteria concerning GMP implementation and mortality rate reduction.
