INFOSAN Emergency Alert: Outbreak of typhoid fever in USA linked to imported frozen mamey pulp

It was informed by INFOSAN that there was an incidence of “Outbreak of typhoid fever in USA linked to imported frozen mamey pulp”.

On 12 August 2010, a multistate outbreak of human typhoid fever infection associated with mamey fruit pulp was reported by US CDC.  From 25 May – 20 August, there were total 9 confirmed cases arisen in a couple of western states.    

Typhoid fever is caused by bacteria called Salmonella Typhi.  The disease is transmitted by ingesting food or water contaminated by patient or carrier of the bacteria. During 20 years, 300-600 cases of typhoid fever have been reported annually in USA. 

It was reported that the current outbreak of typhoid were domestically-acquired and associated with an imported food product.  The epidemiologic study revealed an associate between the illness and consumption of frozen mamey fruit pulp in milkshake or smoothie prepared at home, Hispanic style market or grocery shop.

The implicated fruit pulp product brands are manufactured in Guatemala namely “Goya” and
“La Nuestra”.  These products were recalled on 13 and 20 August 2010.
